Our History

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in December of 1869. Members held church services in private homes until the first log church was built and dedicated in the Spring of 1871. The first called minister was Pastor Johann Schuermer and he was installed on April 14, 1872. Due to the increasing size of the congregation, a bigger church needed to be built. A new church was dedicated on November 4, 1883. On April 9, 1937 the church was completely destroyed by fire. Church services were temporarily held in the school and outdoors. Dedication of the new church was held on December 12, 1937. Several additions have been added onto the church, one being in 1974 and another in 2006. In 1874 a log parsonage was built and was replaced in 1887 when a new parsonage was built. The present parsonage was dedicated on August 21, 1983. The old log church was used as a school until a new school was built and dedicated in 1911. This school was used until May of 1970. Through the years, St. John’s has been served by the following faithful pastors: Rev. Johann Schuermer (1872-1899) Rev. Herus Hupfer (1900-1908) Rev. Gervasius Fischer (1908-1917) Rev. A. Julius Dysterheft (1917-1942) Rev. Hilbert Schaller (1942-1950) Rev. Karl Plocher (1950-1962) Rev. Paul Kuske (1962-1977) Rev. Thomas Kutz (1977-1981) Rev. Mark Guthmiller (1981-1999) Rev. Dennis Reichow (1999-present)
